Your future children would like you to be a doctor
| Since I've been on this What-to-do-with-my-life? kick lately, I've been devouring articles about "work-life balance," a concept that sounds very new-agey but probably dates back to the first caveman who consistently stayed out hunting past 5:00PM.
West Wing. The devoted, earnest staffers on that show have fascinating, meaningful jobs. They make a difference in the world. The work is interesting, deeply gratifying and all-consuming.
And not one of them has a family. None. Nada. Not a spouse in sight, except for the president, who never seems to see his wife. They're like a secular, celibate priesthood of exalted policy wonks.
When I used to watch the show during high school, I never noticed this little oversight. Being at the office until 11:00PM every night looked great!
Now, when my girlfriend and I sit down to watch an episode on DVD, I notice. And even if I didn't notice, you can be damn sure my girlfriend would.
